The Beth E. Buchanan memorial fund is a Fresno, CA based foundation that set to honor the life of Beth E. Buchanan. Beth’s life was tragically cut short on February 13th, 2023 when her car was hit head on by a drunk driver outside of Atlanta, Georgia. Inspired by Beth’s passion and commitment to helping others through action and research, the family created the Beth E. Buchanan Memorial Fund through the Central Valley Community Foundation, which strives to honor Beth’s legacy by supporting other young individuals who, like Beth, are dedicated to beginning a locally-minded community service project or conducting original research projects to help make the world a better place.
As the partner to Beth’s sister, Claire Buchanan, I wanted to help with this endeavor to continue Beth’s legacy any way I could. For me, one way I knew I could help was to commit my time to develop the branding and Website for this foundation. I began by creating a logo that ties in important parts of Beth’s life, as well as creating a website that can accompany it. The website is a place for potential donors to learn about the foundation, learn about Beth, learn about her wonderful cat Boba, see what projects have already been done in Beth’s honor, and as a place where people can return and view a gallery of images of Beth that many of her loved ones have contributed.
The logo for the foundation combines many elements that were important to Beth. The most prominent and obvious element of the logo is Beth’s cat Boba, that is seen peering over the letter B at the beginning of the logo (“B” for Beth and Boba). Another important detail can be found at the period after the capital letter “E”. The period in this case is a small basil leave. The basil leaf draws back to Beth’s giant community garden that she created in high school (that is still operating today!), largely consisting of Basil plants.
